The next step after your private is the instrument rating. It is earned through intensive training focused on flying solely by reference to instruments. A well-trained and proficient instrument pilot can fly an airplane from point A to point B without ever having to look out the window except for takeoff and landing.
How Long Will it Take?
The amount of time required to earn an instrument rating varies and largely depends on weather, availability, finances, and how often a student is available to fly. In our accelerated program, an instrument rating can be earned in approximately two months. If flying only a few times a week, expect to be ready for your instrument checkride in a few months to a year.
What are the Eligibility Requirements?
- Read, speak, write and understand the English language
- Hold a valid private pilot certificate
- 50 hours cross country time
- 40 hours instrument time
- Complete a 250NM cross country along airways or by routing from a air traffic control facility
- Receive flight training and a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor
- Pass a practical test for the aircraft rating sought

Step 1. Flight Training
During this phase, you will undertake 50 hours of cross-country flight, exposing you to diverse terrains, airspace, and navigation challenges. Guided by our instructors, you will gain invaluable experience in planning and executing cross country flights, enhancing your proficiency in flight planning, navigation, and communication. Additionally, you will dedicate 40 hours to instrument time where you will learn to operate solely by reference to instruments developing your skills in precision approaches, holding patterns, and flying in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
Our expert instructors will provide personalized guidance and hands-on training to ensure you master the art of instrument flying and build the necessary confidence to tackle real-world challenges.
Step 2. Written Exam
Achieving instrument proficiency involves demonstrating a strong theoretical understanding of instrument flight principles. In this step, you will prepare for and successfully pass the instrument written exam. Our comprehensive training materials and knowledgeable instructors will provide you with the resources and guidance needed to thoroughly grasp the concepts covered in the exam.
From instrument flight rules (IFR) regulations and procedures to weather theory and instrument navigation, we will equip you with the knowledge and problem-solving skills required to excel in the written exam. Through practice tests, in depth discussions, and one on one support, we will ensure that you are well-prepared to confidently tackle the exam and lay a solid foundation for your instrument training journey.
Step 3. Long Cross Country
Put your newly acquired instrument skills to the test with an exciting long cross country flight, a significant milestone in your instrument training. During this phase, you will apply your knowledge in real world scenarios, mastering advanced navigation techniques and utilizing instrument procedures. Guided by our experienced instructors, you will plan and execute a challenging cross country flight, encountering varying weather conditions, complex airspace, and diverse terrain.
This experience will refine your decision making abilities, enhance your situational awareness, and deepen your understanding of instrument flight operations. As you overcome the challenges of long distance flying, you will develop the confidence and competence required to navigate confidently through the instrument system and safely reach your destination.
Step 4. Checkride
The final step before earning your instrument rating is preparing for the check ride. Our dedicated instructors will provide comprehensive check ride preparation, ensuring you are fully equipped to demonstrate your instrument flying proficiency. Through rigorous practice, simulated check ride scenarios, and detailed feedback, we will fine-tune your skills and knowledge to meet and exceed the evaluation standards.
